Category Archives: 7 Keep Christmas

My FAVORITE of all holidays (and holy days), rich with symbolism and meaning. It is not only deeply spiritual, but full of meaning I get to publicly share during the season, my best witnessing days each year!

The Jesse Tree at Advent

Isaiah 11:1 “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.”

Remember – I do not come from high-church tradition, so I am muddling along – looking for ways to observe this season in meaningful ways.   You can google-search and learn all about Jesse Trees {here is one}.  But I have decided to stop for a few minutes daily and listen to a song and meditate on all Jesus came to do via lyric and melody.

O Christmas Tree.

I love the trees of Christmas.  I love lights on them and sparkly ornaments that reflect the light (isn’t the spiritual connection just so obvious?).  I love that the trees are evergreens.  Because everything about all of it that my mom or Sunday School teachers ever taught me?  I believe, still and I am reminded and renewed in my gratefulness for the Savior annually.

the tree 2011

My Christmas tree’s branches are green, representing the eternal life Jesus’s death and resurrection made available to us.  But if you stripped away the needles and greenery to the bare trunk and you attached a large branch across, you’d seen the barren tree of a curse where God once hung His greatest gift to us.  Jesus wasn’t the gift under the tree, but the gift on a tree.

So annually, we plop a tree up in the living room and string it with lights to remember and observe.   This will never be a pagan ritual for me.  It will ever and always symbolize a Savior, redemption from the curse and green-everlasting and eternal life.

So, pondering this today, I thought of another scripture I love so much.  It speaks to the things that come to try to take our freedom from the curse of sin and death.  It speaks to the heartbreak of broken relationships and addictions or any gut-wrenching pain that has invaded our homes.  It brings hope to the heaviness of our past which may try to rest on us, and against those things that tear our families apart. It promises hope and healing for the diseased and iniquities.  There is hope for a tree, it says in Job:

“At least there is hope for a tree:  If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.  Its roots may grow old in the ground  and its stump die in the soil,  yet at the scent of water it will bud  and put forth shoots like a plant.”   Job 14.7-9

Is this good news, or what?  You know it’s true.  You know a tree can be struck by lightning, mangled by a runaway car or chopped down by a property owner.  It can seem totally defeated by age and bad care, but suddenly, after a rain, new shoots!

So the song I listened to today, to give me that short, song-length reprieve from all the other innumerable things there are to do, is an old Kent Henry song, “Lord I Live by Your Word.”

So many scriptures use the tree as imagery.  The Tree of Life in Genesis shows up again in the last chapter of Revelation.  Jesus is the way to God, He is the Living Word,  the Tree of Life.  And in my living room, there is a green tree filled with lights reminding me that the long awaited Savior did all He came to do – in an everlasting way!

Song for a Sunday // In Expectancy and Preparation

We wait.

baby due 12 16 13

We wait with expectant joy.  A baby is coming.  Joy will be fulfilled and realized with the final Aaaaahhhh-she is here!  She has come!  We understand the anticipation and longing there was for the Messiah “for a people living in darkness…” this year with more vivid zeal and holy anxiousness than ever.  Like children who can barely get to sleep on Christmas Eve as they excitedly anticipate the gifts they’ll find from mommies and daddies who love to give them good things, we await Evangeline’s arrival, sometime before Christmas.

Just a year ago, we were hoping-waiting-cautiously-opening-our-hearts for Malakai.  He came early.  In January.  It was sweet and the consummation of so much prayer and eager yearning.  So sweet…

kai meeting the big santa dec 1 2013

Kai is here today, checking this Santa character out. He isn’t sure about him.  Malakai will be full-fledged walking and running by Christmas morning, I am sure of it.

Advent

And today, the first Sunday of Advent, we remember, with exceeding joy, that the long-awaited Savior of the world, once a mystery and a desiring, yet He already was waiting for us and we acknowledge the beauty of His coming and look for Him again.  He is the Promise.  The Hope and Perfection of all things!

I had an idea!

I didn’t grow up in high-church tradition, so we didn’t observe Advent and the traditional readings and candle-lightings and services that went with the four Sundays leading to Christmas, nor the daily devotionals.  But I discovered them when my children were small and have so so so always tried (or maybe more accurate: wanted to try) to implement the observation, the wreath, the candle-lightings.

Today, after all, the first Sunday of Advent is about HOPE.  It is about the story of the Old Testament Patriarchs, Jesus’s ancestors, looking, waiting, hoping, longing for His coming.  Hope is needed now more than ever…

So, as I was wondering, what song to do for Song for a Sunday, I realized how Advent could totally be a time of songs, too.  Which it probably already is, but I am going to set myself to selecting songs for this season, each one to sing and think about, each to represent our longing and worship as we enter this busy season.

I plan to set apart a few minutes each day, at least long enough for a song, to meditate on the Joy of my Desiring, a Savior!  I’ll share with you if you’d like.  I think this could help lots of busy families who want to observe and celebrate Advent, but can’t find the time.  A song!

Today,  O Come, O Come, Emmanuel by Francesca Battistelli

And my anticipation is doubled because soon, a new grandbebe. And this year, I will comprehend in deeper ways.  And look for Him in my day to day…And this is blessed.

And we watch.  And we wait.

The Tree Lot

It’s really cold today.  And last night I watched “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney, because I just couldn’t wait a whole year.  Plus I need to get into the Christmas mood for some marketing I am starting this week for a **major production**…So I thought I’d check out a few online businesses and see what they have going for Christmas.

So far, Crate and Barrel is the BEST!

They have a “take a trip to the Tree Lot” campaign going and the scroll-down promo is really fun!  Makes me ready for Christmas!  See it {{HERE!}}  Then just scroll down, quickly or slowly and back up if you want.  It’s really cool!

Christmas was a whole MONTH ago!!!

Oh, man.  I had so much more to share about Christmas 2012

But alas, I didn’t get around to it.

Christmas to me is: baking day and the grandbebes getting their hands and feet into paint for me.  It is searching for the gift that isn’t costly, but says in the deepest richest way: I do love you so much, please don’t forget.  It is lots of family events and traditional music and seeing friends and easily THE most evangelistic month of my life each year.

Celebrate with great joy BECAUSE you understand!

Really?  You can “Go Tell it on the Mountain!”  You can declare “Joy to the World” and tell people how the bells are peeling the message that “God is not dead, nor does He sleep,” and so much GOOD NEWS, great tidings of joy and Peace on earth!  :)

Um, yeah- don’t get me started.  Guaranteed, the Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, I will be back here in 10 months writing my head off about the sights and sounds of Christmas and celebrating most of all, a SAVIOR!

However, today being January 25th, I shall end Christmas 2012 (I meant to do this by Epiphany on the 6th) with this little presentation of a few images and a short video of the fam at Christmas.

Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”…Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.   Neh. 8.10,12 NIV

Is Christmas an awful lot of work and effort with the shopping and baking and cooking and decorating and wrapping and crafts and everything else?  It sure is.  To have a big celebration to show your love to the Savior and to your family, it IS an awful lot of work.  But if just one or two of grandbebes grows up and remembers the satin running through our main tree, as it represents the scarlet thread of the blood of Jesus which washes sin whiter than snow for all time, if they recall the trouble I went through to communicate that message so they could know that blood cleanses them – well, then, I can assure you, I will never regret the work of it.

And if they remember they felt loved and cherished and over-indulged, then maybe I will have imparted a little of the love of the Father to them through us, and that is good, too.  He gave it all.

The sound of rejoicing…could be heard far away…

And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.  Neh. 12.43

So….anyway.  It was merry and these are a few of my memories.  One month ago, to the day!

See short video!

This was a gift to Dave from the cast of “Merry Gentlemen”

Six little grandbebes, playing outside

Stephanie surprised me with these on Christmas day.  {{LOVE}}

Forth they went together

Through the rude wind’s wild lament

And the bitter weather

I hear it was cold that day, brrrrrrrrr.  So, thank-you, Stephanie, for the pictures and to all the mommies and daddies who loaned their babies and especially thanks to Gavin (9), Hunter (8), Guinivere (7), Gemma May (5), Averi J (almost 5) and Amelie Belle (2 1/2).  Because they are so darn-tootin’ cute and sweet to their Nonna.

The first 6 grandbebes are my world, my loves, now adding on…!

The 12th Day of Christmas, aka EPIPHANY!

At the risk of being totally seasonally irrelevant, I shall yet be posting pictures and videos of Christmas.  I just will, so brace yourselves.

Though everyone rushes to do away with Christmas, today is really, the final day of Christian-tradition Christmas.  And each year I tell Dave he and I need to enjoy the observance longer by gifting each other one gift daily through Epiphany.

Because, you know how everything seems a blur and you have no superfluous time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to really reflect and prepare Him room and distribute joy to the world and hearken to hear the angel voices and all that?  Well, good grief then.  Let the 12 days of Christmas (beginning on Christmas day) be a time for it, people.

What is missed, I wonder, as we rush to set our goals, barrel into getting back to *our* lives, formulate strategies and resolutions and obliterate every symbol of the Christmas season as fast as we can?  Did we get all we could have from the season?  What if, as the song admonishes, we’d set aside time to receive the gifts of Christmas from our True Love?  Christmas Day is just the first day, ya know?

the 12 days of christmas

Today, January 6th, is a Christian Feast day (read: holiday/holy day) celebrating the manifestation/striking appearance of Jesus (God the Son) come to earth as a human being.  And the Magi showing up to worship Him.

We’ve all already moved on the Valentine’s Day and Easter on Pinterest, haven’t we? Tsk.

Somebody-please groom that dog!

Averi & her IKEA doll

ikea dolls

All the grand-girls got IKEA dolls from a certain Nonna (aka “Nonni,” as dubbed by a few of the grandbebes).

My first dolls were fabric, embroidered faces.  Good memories.  :)

I meant to get a picture f each of them holding their babies, but alas, forgot.  Did get a few of Averi, though, a couple of days later.

And may I say POO to Youtube for mis-identifying the original music and banning it from mobile playability???  I had to change to one of their ugh selections…YT is ticking me off.

Freeze-frame

What a week.  A good week.  A full week.  An exhausting week.

So many snippets to remember.  So many frames I’d like to freeze.

Gemma & her grand-poppa built a castle

Christmas morning – Stormie bringing us breakfast so we wouldn’t be lonely on our first Christmas ever without the whole family in the house, raising the roof with creative gift-giving and happy-noise.   That is a good frame…it worked.

And then guess what?  They all came later and stayed late and it was messy and wonderful just like always.  :)

tupp-the-puppy

Ryan’s family from Florida joined us for Christmas, too.  Then 2 days later, Steph and Tris went for an anniversary celebration and we got the kids and Tuppy-the-Puppy, which made for very merry and bright days, too.

amelie belle
Amelie’s first night ever to stay over with ALL the cousins. She is a big girl now!

Just for added fun, we invited over Hunter and the 2 Rhoades baby girls.

gemma and guini with their relief paintings
Guini and Gemma did “snow” relief paintings with melted wax candles and a watercolor wash.

And the grand-boys and their grand-poppa made this little freeze-frame video.

Using 145 different photographs to fill this 54-second film, we present “Magi This!”  It would have been a longer story, but their parents showed up early.

Now, look around.  What do you see?  Are you blessed, warm, fed and secure?  Has God been faithful up to now?  Freeze the frame in your heart and save it for a rainy day.  Then remember…

Holy shambles!

Christmas lights are twinkling through bedroom windows as nightlights and I pray over cherub faces and tuck each child in with the requisite two stuffed animals and/or squishy toys.  We whisper our good-nights, the boys in one room, and 4 little girls next door.

grandkids at christmas

I give the regular if-you-wake-up-before-everyone-else-please-just-read-a-book-and-don’t-wake-your-cousins speech, though I know with 100% certainty that it will be ignored at 5:54 am sharp tomorrow.  Still, I go through it and ask one more time: Did you go pottie?  Brush your teeth?  I add more blankets so they won’t get cold.  They kick them off, “I’m hot, Nonna.”

Everyone is tucked.  I can’t help but pray over them again and again for God’s anointing on their little lives and for peace and joy and for good restful sleep and a smile in their hearts and for God to heal little sniffles and keep them safe from evil, who lurks near our babies – this, we know.  I pray and I pray and they let me.  They make their requests known and soon, if I don’t say amen, we will be up all night praying over every detail in their universes…

More hugs, more kisses, more one-last-drinks…whew.  We made it.

I walk into the hallway and through my house.  O.my.goodness.  There are globs of toothpaste in every sink, toothbrushes teetering on counter edges.  There are overcoats and outer-wear and underwear strewn about in bathrooms, entry, living room, family room, and yes, even in the kitchen.  Every couch pillow and cushion has been used otherwise and our floor is covered with blankets and baggies of cheese balls and water bottles with names written on them.  Are there any toys left in the playroom, I wonder?

12 29 12 with their reindeer prints

Is that a marshmallow gun target on our front door?  Why, yes, it is.  Why do you ask?

Evidence of a family feast-night and a disco dance and watching the Turtle Man- Christmas episode and a couple of Gilligan’s Island re-runs (to my great dismay) and my house is in utter, complete and total jumbled, snarly, tangled, topsy-turvy, chaos and clutter, with a side order of full-blown dishevelment.  Yep.  It is a mess.

And me?  I love it.  I am neck-deep in grandbebes and it is grand!

Still basking in the glow of the holy days of the holidays. Merriment continues…
